How Words With Friends differs from Scrabble

The board layout, the bonus-square positions and several tile values are different, and the game uses its own word list. J and Z are worth more, L and U are worth more, and a handful of words legal in one game are not legal in the other. This page uses the Words With Friends values, so the numbers match what the app will award you.

Reading the results

Words are grouped by length, longest first, each with its Words With Friends point value. That value is the base score for the word itself — the app adds the bonuses for the squares you play across, which is why a short word on a triple-word square often beats a long word in open space.

Getting more out of your rack

Keep a workable mix of vowels and consonants, learn the two-letter words so you can play parallel to an existing word and score every crossing at once, and use ? for blanks. To browse by shape rather than by rack, try words by length or words by letter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Words With Friends dictionary the same as Scrabble?
No. Words With Friends uses its own word list, and several letters are worth different points, so the same rack can score differently in each game.
Why are my points different in the app?
The score shown here is the base value of the word. The app adds the board bonuses for the squares you play on.
Can I search with a blank tile?
Yes — type ? for each blank you hold. Blanks score zero but let you complete words you could not otherwise play.
