Type the letters you already have and a ? for each empty square — for example C?T?E — and we list every word that fits.

Pattern matching
Type the letters you know, and ? for each empty square

Writing a pattern

Type the letters you already have and a ? for every square you do not, keeping them in the order they appear in the grid. C?T?E means a five-letter word with C first and T third. A dot, an underscore or a space works the same way as ?, so you can paste a pattern from any puzzle site without editing it.

Narrowing a long list

Short patterns with few known letters can match hundreds of words. Use Must include for a letter you know is somewhere in the answer but cannot place, and switch the dictionary to match the puzzle — a Scrabble list is stricter than the full word list.

Crosswords, hangman and missing letters

Anything that gives you letters in fixed positions works here: cryptic crossword fill, hangman, a wheel-of-fortune board, or a word game that reveals letters one at a time. For letters with no fixed positions, use the word unscrambler instead.
