How the word unscrambler works

Give it a jumble of letters and it checks all 281,649 words in the dictionary, returning every one your letters can spell. Results group by length, longest first, so the full-length answer to a scramble puzzle sits at the top of the page.

When you are missing a letter

Type ? in place of any letter you cannot read or do not have. The unscrambler tries every possibility for that slot, which is what makes it work on a smudged newspaper puzzle as well as on a Scrabble rack.

Unscrambling for word games

Switch the dictionary in Filters to keep only words that are legal in your game — Scrabble US, Scrabble UK or Words With Friends. If you want the words that use every letter rather than any subset, use the anagram solver instead.
