How a word's score works
A word's base score is the sum of its letters. In Scrabble, QUIZ is Q(10) + U(1) + I(1) + Z(10) = 22 points. Every result on this site shows that base score, so the numbers are comparable between words.
Bonus squares
On a real board, double- and triple-letter squares multiply a single tile and double- and triple-word squares multiply the whole word. Those depend on where you place it, so they are never included here.
Blank tiles
A blank is worth zero but can be any letter. Spend it on the letter you cannot otherwise supply, not on a one-point vowel.
Scrabble versus Words With Friends
The two games do not agree. H is worth 4 in Scrabble and 3 in Words With Friends; L is 1 and 2; U is 1 and 2; V is 4 and 5; J is 8 and 10. Pick the matching dictionary in any finder on this site and the scores shown will match the game you are actually playing.
Where the high-value letters live
The 8- and 10-point tiles are rare precisely because few words use them. That is what makes the letter pages useful when one lands on your rack — see words with Q, words with Z or words with X.
